This is our winning photo, “River Crossing”. My mom takes found dolls, usually Barbie dolls or G.I. Joe dolls, and paints them and then photographs them in various scenarios and mixes things up in Photoshop. I'm more into the un-manipulated image kind of thing, so this series is basically straight out of the camera. She and I drove from Denver to San Francisco, retracing the route she had taken in a VW Bus when she was nineteen. We sort of followed these “Painted People” across the west, from the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific. It was way fun!
“Fiery Furnace”, in Arches National Park.
“Sand Mountain”, this totally crazy gigantic dune in Nevada.
“Ocean Overlook”, just north of San Francisco. They made it!
Wow, what an amazing idea! I love it!
